“IRAP” or Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP) is an exciting new articular therapy available at our hospital. Interleukin-1(IL-1) was originally identified as a regulator of cartilage function in 1977. Today, IL-1 is recognized for its capacity to produce most, if not all, of the enzymes that are involved in cartilage destruction. Using 60 mls of equine blood, a manufacturing kit and the incubator in our hospital lab, we can produce an enzyme that blocks the actions of IL-1 called Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IRAP).

It is used principally for horses that are no longer getting a positive response from hyaluronic acid (Acid) or depomedrol (cortisone), or for horses that must compete in a drug free environment. Please contact Dr. Peloso at the clinic if you have additional questions regarding this new and exciting articular therapy
