Internal Medicine

Dr. Barry David is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and is the specialist in charge of the internal medicine services offered by Equine Medical Center of Ocala. The internal medicine department is supported by head nurse Shanna Tipton.  Internal medicine is a specialty field of veterinary medicine that addresses problems of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, dermatology, gastrointestinal, oncology (cancer), muscular and neonatal nature. During the foaling season the core of the internal medicine caseload is occupied with newborn foals in our intensive care unit.  The ICU provides advanced monitoring, diagnostics, therapeutics, and 24 hour critical care.

Older equine patients, from weanlings to adults, may suffer from a range of maladies such as:

  • Loss of performance
  • Neurological conditions (EPM, West Nile Virus, EEE, Wobbler’s disease)
  • Gastric ulcer disease
  • Weight loss
  • Acute and chronic diarrhea
  • Respiratory disease
  • Chronic colic
  • Sick brood mares
  • Heart disease
  • Muscular disorders
  • Skin cancer

Through advanced training and the provision of specialized equipment, we are able to offer our patients the finest internal medicine care obtainable in Marion County.
